Introduction

The chapel in Breuil-Cervinia dedicated to Maria Regina Vallis Augustanae is located at the entrance to the tourist resort of Valtournenche, in a highly visible position along the main road. It is a small place of worship built after World War II, with the intention of entrusting the local community and the many visitors who come to the Matterhorn basin to the protection of the Virgin Mary. The name 'Regina Vallis Augustanae' refers to the traditional Marian devotion in Valle d'Aosta, which recognises Mary as the guardian and spiritual patroness of the entire Aosta Valley.

Description

The chapel is a simple building, in line with mountain architecture: sober lines, plastered stone masonry and a two-pitch roof covered in slab tiles. The main façade features a wooden portal surmounted by a small triangular tympanum; above it is a niche with a statue of the Madonna. The interior is cosy and sober, designed as a space for meditation and prayer, with a small altar dedicated to Mary. In the park adjacent to the chapel, a bronze half-bust has been placed in memory of Mike Bongiorno, a famous television personality deeply attached to Cervinia.
